Youth Hunt Weekend Texas

The fall Special Youth Hunting Weekend in Texas is set for October 29-30, 2011 this year. The Texas Parks and Wildlife department has set aside these special seasons as a way to encourage adults to share their hunting experiences with the next generation of hunters.

TP&W sets aside the special seasons for white-tailed deer, Rio Grande turkey and waterfowl on October 29-30, before the general hunting seasons. This has become quite the tradition in our house since 2004. Getting our kids out in the field early, and often has really helped to set their foundation in alot of the ways that we would want it to be for them.

So, make plans this weekend to take someone hunting. It doesn't take much to sit in a stand and watch a feeder with your kids. You'll be surprised how much you learn about them, and about yourself.

Here's this year's information direct from the TP&W website:

Special Youth-Only Season: Early open season: Oct. 29-30, 2011. Late open season: Jan. 2-15, 2012.
Bag limits, provision for the take of antlerless deer, and special requirements of the county, shall be as specified for the period Nov. 24-27, 2011. Licensed hunters 16 years of age or younger may hunt deer by any lawful means during this season.

So, if you can find the time make sure you get your kids into the field this year. You will be amazed how it will change your outlook on life. Suddenly things aren't "as" important as you thought they were. Time slows down, your kids learn things that don't have anything to do with a video game. Who knows, they might actually get some sun because they are outside.

Most importantly they will actually enjoy your company, listen to what you are trying to teach them and want to go back year after year. I know my kids will want to hunt if they are able when they are adults. I can also tell you that my grandkids will hunt without me having to force the issue because of it. That's important to me.

Hunting was a real outlet in my life. It changed my life when I was a young man. The difference with it and without it was significant. Every single time I take my kids, or other kids hunting I can see the difference our hunt made in their life. I can see how it changed them to hunt, and to be a part of a brotherhood of hunters. That's a big deal for me. When I see that, I know they will be "ok". The sense of understanding, and "give back" that I get from doing this is greater than any trophy animal I have ever taken.

So, find your own reasons for taking a kid hunting this weekend in Texas. All of the reasons are important, and they all matter. What matters most is that kid. He/She is the future. You will be absolutely amazed at the difference 2 days in a blind will make for your kid. And for you? Forget about it..... what you get out of the deal is the best part.... You get to pass it on....
